Ryukyu BINGATA

Activities of Ryukyu Bingata Preservation and Expansion Consortium

What is the Ryukyu Bingata
Preservation and Expansion
Consortium?

Bingata is a technique of textile dyeing that is representative of Okinawa. Also known as "Ryukyu bingata," the history of this technique dates back as far as the 13th century.

Its motif of tropical fauna, scenery and its inspirational designs have captivated many. The intricate design of bingata are created by the hands of master craftsmen, and the appreciation of the craft as works of art has been growing steadily over the years.

The Consortium strives to spread the appeal of bingata to the world. Its goals also include providing an environment where bingata may be used, as Ryukyu bingata designs are often used without proper permission from the original artists.

The Consortium’s mission is to pass on the craft and techniques of Ryukyu bingata to future generations from a cultural and economical standpoint.
